Change Please – the coffee brand tackling homelessness, one cup at a time!
Recent statistics show that around 4000 people sleep rough every night – and that’s just in the UK. Change Please, is a London based social enterprise which is tackling the homeless crisis one cup of coffee at a time.
It’s generally accepted that, whether at home or as part of the daily commute, one of the first things we tend to do is grab ourselves a coffee The average Londoner treats themselves to at least two cups of a coffee a day and the habit is still growing continuing to rise. With more and more coffee outlets appearing across the UK and an increased preference for ground coffee instead of instant, the demand for skilled employees is high.
Change Please has not only come up with a solution to the industry’s employee shortage but has also found a way for coffee to not only taste good but to also do good. By encouraging the homeless community to get involved in their training programme, they provide the tools and motivation they need to improve their employability and quality of life.
So how does it work? Change Please is a social enterprise staffed by the homeless, to help the homeless. Trainee baristas are given support to overcome barriers such as accommodation and are paid a full London living wage whilst spending six months on their cart, learning valuable vocational and social skills to help them re-enter society and move on to full time employment with the assistance of the numerous partners of the programme, such as CrisisUK, The Big Issue, One Housing Group and the Single Homeless Project.
